The battle between the Mayor of the Freetown City Council (FCC), His Worship Franklyn Bode Gibson and Abacha Street traders has gained momentum as the latter remains defiant to stop their street trading. However, Mayor Gibson on the other hand is said to be determined and adamant in making sure that Abacha Street is totally free from street trading.
Meanwhile, a committee has been set up to find speedy solutions to get the traders off the streets. The committee was formed during a meeting organized by the Minister of Trade and Industry, Alhaji Osman Boi Kamara and the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Mr. Allieu Pat Sow in the company of the traders and the Mayor of Freetown, Frankly Bode Gibson.
Speaking to Global Times, the Public Relations Officer, Mr. Cyril Mattia said council has built markets which are currently empty because traders have deliberately refused to occupy them. He highlighted places like Bombay Street Market, Fisher Street Market and the top floor of Kroo Town Road Market.
Mr. Mattia noted that the traders can also use the Sewa Ground Market but they have asked council to provide them with a head cover that will protect them from the sun. The Public Relations Officer assured that they will soon try to meet the traders demand.
