Bench Warrant for SLPA Manager, Others

Bench Warrant for SLPA Manager, Others

By Jane B. Mansaray……..
The presiding High Court Judge Justice Patrick Hamilton in the ongoing matter involving 184 aggrieved redundant workers of the Sierra Leone Ports Authority (SLPA) yesterday ordered a bench warrant of arrest for the General Manager and Finance officer of SLPA who are serving as the defendants in the matter for treating the court with levity.
It can be recalled two years ago when the said staff of SLPA was terminated from service without complete payment of their benefits. Instead of taking the law into their own hands, the aggrieved workers decided to take the matter to court for the balance payment after patiently waiting on the authority to comply with their complain.
The first hearing of the matter in court was first presided by Justice Solomon who ruled that the SLPA must pay the balance money owed the plaintiffs to avoid any further court matter. Justice Solomon ruled that failure on the part of the SLPA to comply the court would ensure that the company’s bank accounts would be ordered closed.
The ruling was not complied by the SLPA management eventually as a result of which a court order was sent to the various banks in connection with the matter and the position of the court.
Justice Hamilton noted that he had been patient with the defendants for a long time for them to comply without their cooperation by neglecting the court orders. In his ruling Justice Hamilton made mention of Guaranty Trust Bank that had complied with the court order.
In the premise Lawyer Elvis Kargbo applied for a bench warrant of arrest for the management of SLPA for them to take the matter serious. Lawyer for the defendants A.B. Bangura told the court that he was in the process of bringing both parties together in order to resolve the matter amicable which was over ruled.
The matter was adjourned to the 20th October 2014. Of the 184 plaintiffs 9 of them have already passed away.
