Ebola Kills 18 Imams

The National Secretary General of the United Council of Imams in Sierra Leone (UCISL), Mr. Mohamed Sheriff-Conteh has said in Freetown that since the outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease, 18 Imams from the Eastern Region have been killed by the virus. The Secretary General made this disclosure last Sunday 14th September 2014 at the Congo Cross Central Mosque.
The one-day zonal sensitization on Ebola attracted Chief Imams and their assistants from over fifty (50) Mosques within the Western part of Freetown starting from Kroo Town Road on to Goderich Community.
The workshop was organised by the Western Regional Council of the United Council of Imams.
He said the two Imams that have been killed by Ebola in Kenema are Sheikh Abubakarr Turay and Sheikh Usif Feikah.
Kailahun has lost the following Imams: Alhaji Idrissa Kamara, Imam Mustapha Jaward, Sheikh Ibrahim Hafroadie, Imam Abubakarr Jaward, Sheikh Hassan Sheriff, Sheikh Fuad Allim Kawa, Imam Mohamed Kawa, Sheikh Vandi, Mariama, Sheikh Sheku Brown, Sheikh Issa Ibrahim, Sheikh Jaward Kamara, Alhaji Abubakarr Turay, Sheikh Sheku Sesay, Alhaji Abubakarr Dukalay and Sheikh Lansana Nyallay.
Mr. Conteh appealled to the government to assist the relatives and children of the dead Imams.
The Chief Imam of Congo Cross, Chief Alhaji Alie Bangura said the seminar was geared towards complementing government’s effort towards combating the spread of the Ebola virus disease.
He said as religious leaders they are concerned about the member of people who have died of Ebola and those that have contracted the virus.
Dr. Foday Kallon who chaired the occasion said Imams acknowledge the efforts of the government of Sierra Leone and his partners towards combating the Ebola epidemic.
