FBC SU Government Rejected

Thousands of students of Fourah Bay College yesterday turned out at the newly renovated Amphi Theatre to witness the inauguration of an interim body formed by the Students Union body to represent students on student affairs. But many were shocked when authorities at the University of Sierra Leone announced that they will not approve the said elected body.

Addressing students, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of USL, Professor Gbamanja said that he had met with the President of the National Union of Students, Mohamed Sheridan Kamara who told him that they had conducted an election comprising of different society Presidents on campus where a leader was elected to lead the interim body, but was surprised to have received several protest letters yesterday mornning complaining that the interim body does not reflect different factions on campus, and that the authorities should not approve it, and therefore called on the authorities to conduct a transparent and fair election where every students would cast their votes to chose their leader.

Professor Gbamanja said that for the past three to four years, students have been crying for a representative government, but due to the violent act of some students their activities were put on ice.

Professor Gbamanja said that there is a plan to call a meeting at least once a month so that students will be able to interact with the administrative body of the University as that has been their utmost concern.

Professor Ekundayo Thompson, Acting Vice Chancellor of the USL said that the University is governed by the Education Act of 2004 and the University Act of 2005 which state the scope and limitation of every authority in the University.

Professor Thompson said that the University has an obligation to transform its students to be good leaders for the country

Professor Thompson said that with the ongoing strike of the Academic Staff Association (ASA), they are on dialogue to ensure that lectures resume soon.

S.N. Dumbuya, Registrar of the University said that students are like customers without them all positions in the USL are useless. He admonished students to be law abiding and know that only upon graduation, one will consider themselves as a full member of the University.
