The most popular flagbearer contender in the SLPP, Brig. (Rtd) Julius Maada Bio told the Global Times last night that he would welcome a fair contest for the post of party flagbearer. “I am not averse to the idea of people running for the post of flagbearer in the SLPP… It is the tradition of our great party to encourage good people to openly contest for elective positions… That is a tradition that all of us in the party should uphold… I believe in a fair contest”, said Brig. Bio.
Brig. Bio condemned the current stalemate in the party and called on people of goodwill to help resolve the impasse. “I have said repeatedly that we cannot resolve our differences on the airwaves… We have to sit down as a family and resolve our differences… For my part, I am prepared to meet with anybody, at any time as long as such meeting will bring lasting peace to our great party”, Brig. Bio said.
The SLPP 2012 flagbearer noted that it is only a united SLPP that can win a national election. “We have to come together and remove the APC from power through the ballot box… As the oldest political party in the country, we should be seen to be playing the role of a responsible political party…I am calling on all genuine SLPP members and supporters to eschew violence and work towards victory for our great party in 2018… We cannot afford to let the people of Sierra Leone down by failing to provide responsible leadership in opposition… We are a government in waiting so, we should be seen to be behaving and acting responsibly”, said Brig. Bio.
The 2012 flagbearer of the SLPP noted that it was a shame that the party was always in the news for all the wrong reasons. “Let us end this senseless leadership wrangling in the party and unite for the good of our members, supporters and the nation”, Brig. Bio admonished.
