At a time when the average Sierra Leonean is struggling to eke out a living, the government of President Ernest Bai Koroma is busy organising a jamboree for Cabinet Ministers and their deputies at the Tokeh beach resort.
The two-day retreat is expected to cost the tax payers well over Le1Billion (One Billion Leones), according to sources at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development.
Each and every member of the Cabinet attending the retreat will be entitled to stay in a room costing US$ 400 (Four hundred United States dollars) a night. The retreat is being organised by the Chief of Staff at State House, Dr. Richard Konteh.
President Ernest Bai Koroma did not attend yesterday’s opening ceremony because of an urgent engagement in the Nigerian capital of Abuja. He was represented by the Senior Presidential Adviser at State House, Alhaji I.B. Kargbo.
The Minister of Finance, Dr. Kaifala Marah is also in attendance. Some Ministers who did not attend the retreat described it as “a waste of poor tax payers’ money”.
A senior Cabinet Minister who boycotted the retreat described it as “an extravagant exercise”.
Dr. Richard Konteh was unavailable for comment last night.
