Some Cabinet Ministers have refused to use the Land Cruiser Station Wagon supplied to them as official vehicles because they are deemed to be sub-standard. Some of the vehicles do not meet the required specification as required by the terms of the contract.
Speaking to the Global Times last night, a senior Cabinet Minister said, “I have refused to use my own official vehicle because it lacks a cooling and heating system….The vehicles are just basic and of low quality”.
The vehicles were not verified by the Sierra Leone Road Transport Authority before they were supplied to the government, noted a senior RTA official. A letter written by the RTA demanding verification was ignored by the supplier.
The Minister of Transport and Aviation, Balogun Logus Koroma is reportedly in talks with the supplier to see how best the situation can be amicably resolved.
President Ernest Bai Koroma is said to be very angry especially when the supplier is said to be a personal friend of his. “The President has asked that the substandard vehicles be withdrawn and replaced with immediate effect”, said a senior Presidential Aide at State House.
The supplier was contracted to supply thirty seven vehicles for use by the government of Seirra Leone. He had been implicated in an earlier government of Sierra Leone contract for the supply of seed rice to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security for which he was dragged to court by the government.
The supplier was reportedly out of the country when he was contacted last night.
