The young and charismatic Chairman/Leader of UDM (United Democratic Movement), Mohamed Bangura has been appointed as the Interim Chairman of APPA (ALL Political Parties Association).
The revival of APPA, came hot on the heels of intra – party disputes among the leadership of several registered political parties, including the oldest political party in the country, SLPP (Sierra Leone Peoples Party).
Last week, the new APPA Interim Chairman, led a delegation, comprising all nine registered political parties (with the exception of CDP) to the offices of the SLPP, to initiate dialogue with the warring factions within the Party’s national executive.
APPA representatives met with a group, headed by Dr. Prince Alex Harding, the SLPP Deputy National Chairman/Leader. The outcome of that meeting has been described by Hon. Musa Tamba Sam as “very promising”.
Another meeting is to be held today, between APPA and another faction within the SLPP led by the party’s National Chairman/Leader, Chief Somano Kapen.
APPA is determined to negotiate lasting peace among the leadership of the SLPP, RUFP and the PDP according to an interim official of the association.
Last Friday, Mr. Bangura led another delegation, to meet with the new UNDP Resident Representative in Sierra Leone. The association briefed the new UNDP representative on activities that they intend to undertake and asked for support.
APPA representatives called on the UNDP boss in Sierra Leone to consider the possibility of logistical support for the establishment of a permanent secretariat and also the payment of subvention to political parties to facilitate their work. The UNDP Resident Representative welcomed the suggestions and promised to speedily look into them.
Meanwhile, the National Secretary General of PMDC, Mr. William Tucker has been appointed as Interim Secretary General of APPA.
