Leobat 1 of the Sierra Leone contingent serving as peacekeepers in Somalia will finally return in Freetown in the second week of January 2014 after serving for 18 months on the African Union Peacekeeping Mission in Somalia.
Sources close to the Ministry of Defence in Freetown revealed to the Global Times yesterday that Leobat 1 was supposed to have returned home since last week but was deferred to January next year due to some security arrangement.
Reports say Leobat 1 under the command of Lt. Col. Abu Conteh has been doing a tremendous job in their area of deployment in Somalia, especially at Kismayo, where the Al-Shabab were fighting to take over.
The Sierra Leone contingent should have arrived earlier in June this year after serving one year on the AU Mission but their colleagues in Leobat 2 were prevented by the Somalia government from returning home due to the Ebola outbreak.
