Police Prosecutes Police

Police Inspector Alusine Dumbuya attached to the Human Resource Department at Police Headquarters on George Street in Freetown on Tuesday February 25testified in the ongoing fraud case involving former Detective Police Constable 14302  M.M. Kamara attached to the same department. The accused Mohamed Michael Kamara faces seven counts charge of conspiracy contrary to law, forgery contrary to section 4(1) of the Forgery Act 1913 and other related charges of altering, forgery , and forgery contrary to law.

In his evidence, Inspector Dumbuya told the court that he recognized the accused person as a former workmate within the said Human Resource Department at Police Headquarters.

He said he recalled on a date between the 1 to 31 January 2014 while at the said department collating academic results of Police personnel submitted to him to be retained in the various personal files of personnel to be upgraded for the purpose of increment of salary and promotions. He went on to say that among the documents the accused person’s statement of result and attestation from the Milton Margai College of Education and Technology were identified.

Inspector Dumbuya told the court that based on the accused person’s documents he had cause to write a letter of verification to the college and few weeks he received a photo copy correspondent from the college denying the name and result of the accused person as having enrolled in the institution. As a result of the report, he immediately informed the head of the department A.I. G. Kalia Sesay who then invited the accused person for questioning.

A panel of investigating committee was set up at the Criminal Disciplinary Information and Investigation Department (CDIID) at Police headquarters, George Street in Freetown to further investigate the accused person’s claims.

The accused person has so far been dismissed from the Police force and charged to court before Principal Magistrate Komba Kamanda of Magistrate court No. 2 where he was refused bail and sent to Pademba Road Prison for the second time. The statement of result was tendered as exhibit Z1 -2 and the verification letter was tendered as exhibit Y1-3.

Lawyer E.F. Edwards and I.K. Kanu are defending the accused person while Inspector Kelly Dumbuya is prosecuting the matter.

The matter was adjourned to the 3rd March, 2014.
