On Saturday 9th April, 2016 President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma formally opened the biggest Oil Mill in West Africa, built by Socfin Agricultural Company (SL) Limited. The mill was built in the Malen Chiefdom, Pujehun District.
Socfin invested well over US$130M (One hundred and thirty million United States dollars) in the construction of the mill.
The mill provides jobs for hundreds of youths and women in especially the Pujehun district.
President Koroma told a mammoth gathering on Saturday that, the opening of the mill is a clear indication that Sierra Leone is now open for business. The occasion was witnessed by the Country Director of Socfin, Gerben Haringsma and the General Manager of the company, Philip Tonks.
Several distinguished dignitaries including senior government officials, Members of Parliament, the Paramount Chief and other local authorities in the Malen Chiefdom graced the occasion.
A planned demonstration spearheaded by Green Scenery against Socfin was banned by the Police for security reasons.
