President Koroma’s Elephant Trap

By Sorie Fofana…………………….
Even before the meeting between President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma and Brig. (Rtd.) Julius Maada Bio ended at State House on Monday, the President’s propaganda brigade had issued a press statement, quoting President Koroma as having urged Politicians “To focus on ending Ebola” as this was “Not the time for Politics”.
The President’s warning came hot on the heels of media reports that, two contenders for the leadership of the APC Party had been campaigning openly in Freetown, Bo and Kono to succeed him.
Long before now, the President had known that, some of his closest allies in the APC Party were in a hurry to replace him as Chairman, Leader and Flagbearer of the Party.
Some Cabinet Ministers who had shown interest in leading the APC Party, have either been sacked or have been kept in perpetual fear by the Presidential war machine in the APC Party.
VP Sam Sumana, Alimamy P. Koroma, Alhaji I.B. Kargbo, Dr. Richard Konte and Kemoh Sesay have all been viciously removed from the political limelight.
Dr. Kaifala Marah, Dr. Sam Sesay and Hon. Alimamy Kamara have been keeping their political cards close to their chests. They don’t want to fall in the elephant trap that has been set for any potential challenger to the leadership of the party.
Moseray Fadika and John Sisay have been on a well-publicised whirl wind tour of the country, introducing themselves to the electorate as potential flagbearer contenders in the APC Party. It is difficult for the President to stop them in their track, because, they do not hold any public office at his behest.
That is where party discipline comes in. Does the President not know that, these two guys are campaigning openly to succeed him as Leader, Chairman and Flagbearer of the APC Party?
President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma is a very schrewd Politician. Nobody knows what is running through his mind. What is certain though is that, President Ernest Bai Koroma is not convinced that, any of these people could convincingly win a national election. That’s the President’s dilemma at the moment.
There is talk that President Ernest Bai Koroma is determined to succeed himself, because, the APC Party does not have any attractive Presidential candidate for the pending Presidential elections in 2017/18. Will the President get the required support he needs from some young radicals in the party to continue to lead them even after his mandatory term would have come to an end in 2017/18?
If President Koroma is warning Politicians to focus on the fight against Ebola and stop playing politics, he should as well put his own APC house in order. Margaret Thatcher would have said, “Physician, heal thy self”.
Many people are waiting to see who will be the next APC potential flagbearer contender to be entrapped by President Koroma’s elephant trap.
