When the SLPP was voted out of office in 2007, many people wrote the party off. Some people even went as far as saying that, the party stood no chance of bouncing back to power.
In 2012, the SLPP Presidential candidate, Brig. (Rtd) Julius Maada Bio was defeated by the then incumbent President, Ernest Bai Koroma of the APC. Again, even within SLPP circles, there was hardly anyone who believed that, five years later, the party would return to power.
In fact, many people had argued that, the party was defeated in 2012 simply because, the Presidential candidate, Brig (Rtd) Julius Maada Bio was unfit for purpose.
Many people defected from the SLPP either to join other political parties or to form new parties. Those who believe in the vision and aspiration of the party stayed and fought a fierce battle to return the party to power. Brig (Rtd) Julius Maada Bio did not waver. He went through a very turbulent period to retain the position of party flag bearer.
Brig. (Rtd) Julius Maada Bio was reelected party flag bearer in November 2017. Immediately after his overwhelming victory in the flag bearer election, Brig. (Rtd) Julius Maada Bio hit the ground running.
During the election campaign, Brig. (Rtd) Julius Maada Bio sold to the nation, a very attractive package of programs for the development of the country. And the country bought it wholesale.
For ten years, some of us endured the indignities associated with being an opposition supporter in this tiny West African state of Sierra Leone. But we kept faith and stayed the course. We never left the party! We never wavered! We supported Brig. (Rtd) Julius Maada Bio because, we believe in him.
During very difficult times in opposition, we never left the party. Even though most people had written off the Brigadier, some of us stayed and defended not only the party but the Presidential candidate as well.
Since Brig. (Rtd) Julius Maada Bio was declared winner of the March 31, 2018 Presidential run-off election, many people who never associated or even supported the party, have been seen, moving from one point to the other, lobbying for jobs in the new government.
We believe that, those who stood by the party and promoted the ambition of President Brig. (Rtd) Julius Maada Bio deserve to be compensated. For ten years, they suffered greatly under the APC administration. Now that their party has come to power, they should be compensated for being faithful and loyal to the party.
Some of the people who are now running behind the new President for job and protection are the same people who even went as far as saying that, the SLPP would never come to power and that, Brig. (Rtd) Julius Maada Bio was a liability to the party. We call on President Brig. (Rtd) Julius Maada Bio to beware of wolves in sheep’s clothing.
The new President should ensure that, all government contracts awarded from 2007 to 2018 are thoroughly investigated to ascertain whether or not, the people of this country got value for money.
President Brig. (Rtd) Julius Maada Bio should also ensure that, the Auditor General’s Annual Report and recommendations are given the required attention they deserve.
Our last word for today is for President Bio to beware of wolves in sheep’s clothing!
