The Minister of Information and Communications, Mohamed Bangura said in Freetown yesterday that, Government Ministers in Sierra Leone are the least paid Ministers in the world.
Mr. Bangura disclosed that, as a Cabinet Minister, he is paid Le12,500,000 (Twelve Million Five hundred thousand Leones) a month as salary. That is about US$1,900.00 (One thousand nine hundred United States dollars). “This is a ridiculous sum of money considering my status as a Cabinet Minister”, he said.
He said the international community and donor partners continue to support the government even though general elections are just around the corner. “This shows that, we have fiscal discipline and we spend our limited resources in a very prudent way… We will continue to effectively manage the economy so that salaries will be paid, social services will continue to function and colleges and universities will remain open”, Mr. Bangura said.
Some Cabinet Ministers, he said, live on the goodwill of their friends “in order to make ends meet”.
