The opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party Member of Parliament for Constituency 011 in Kenema District has described the recent budget read by the Minister of Finance in Parliament as unrealistic.
While contributing to the bill entitled the Appropriation Act 2014, Hon Saidu Mansaray said it is easier to tell an economy that is working from one that is not. He said the economy that meets the socio- economic needs of the people is more pro-poor than that which grows on paper alone. He said as far as he is concerned, there is nothing to indicate or give the people of Sierra Leone any hope that the economy of Sierra Leone was working, because, according to him, abject poverty and high unemployment are rife among the youth.
The SLPP MP said rolling over Le 150 billion budget from last financial year to this year which the Minister was gleeful over is indicative of the fact that no better opportunity was given to the people this year.
He said government must accept the fact that poverty and unemployment are still rife and that what is needed is an overhaul of the financial management of the country, taken in to account the critical needs of the poor people.
