It has been alleged that the SLPP Chairman for Port Loko district, Mr. Obai Kabia has called on a good number of party supporters to join him defect to the All Peoples Congress (APC) Party if delegates refused to vote for Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella as their party’s standard bearer.
This allegation was made by the SLPP Chairman for the Lungi Section of Constituency 55, Pa. Lansana Turay.
According to Pa. Turay, before the just concluded SLPP Lower level elections, Mr. Obai Kabia visited their Constituency in Lungi, where he urged a large crowd of SLPP members and supporters particularly delegates to vote for him, Obai Kabia and Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella.
Pa. Turay further alleged that, Mr. Obai Kabia told them that the SLPP can only come back to power if majority of party delegates agree to elect Dr. Yumkella as their flagbearer for the 2018 elections.
Furthermore, Pa. Turay said that on Saturday, 17th September, 2016, the National Chairman of the SLPP, Chief Somano Kapen and Mr. Obai Kabia called them to a meeting at Masiaka, where they also asked them to please vote for them and Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella.
Pa. Turay said the meeting was attended by a good number of other delegates whom he doesn’t know. “After the meeting, before we could even sign for our transport fare refunds, which was one hundred thousand Leones each, we were asked to swear on either the Quran or the Bible that we will keep to our promise”, he alleged.
Pa. Turay further alleged that the swearing was administered by Mr. Obai Kabia who asked them to repeat after him…“If I don’t vote for those I am asked to vote for let the Quran and/or Bible fight me”.
Mr. Turay concluded that he did not subscribe to the oath and did not collect their money. “Others took the money…I together with the others that left from my Constituency did not take the said money”, he concluded.
Both Chief Kapen and Mr. Kabia were unavailable for comments last night. We intend to carry their reaction whenever we are able to reach them on the phone.
