Since he was appointed Minister of Water Resources in 2013, Momodu Maligi has been accused of working tirelessly to undermine the Management of Guma Valley Water Company. He has not done anything to empower the Management of the company. His Ministry has written several letters to State House, calling on the Guma Valley Water Company Management to be replaced. All these calls have fallen on deaf ears at State House.
Very recently, the Minister allegedly incited some Civil Society activists to call for the dissolution of the Guma Valley Water Company Management as a result of the acute water shortage in the capital city of Freetown.
But, how is Bankole Mansaray (the General Manager of Guma Valley Water Company) personally responsible for this state of affairs? What support is the Ministry of Water Resources giving to Guma Valley Water Company? Unlike SALWACO which is being adequately funded by the ADB, World Bank and UNICEF, Guma Valley is not getting the required support it needs to execute its mandate.
The Minister has marginalized all the professional heads in his Ministry and has recruited his former colleague at Standard Chartered Bank, Joel as his Personal Assistant. How come both of them lost their jobs at Standard Chartered Bank? What has Joel got to do with procurement in that Ministry? Why is he using official vehicles meant for Ministry officials? Who is responsible for replacing an official vehicle of the Ministry that got destroyed in a road accident involving Joel? Is he entitled to the use of an official vehicle in the Ministry of Water Resources?
Why is Momodu Maligi directing all donor funds to be credited into the account of SALWACO instead of the Ministry of Water Resources? What is the level of accountability at SALWACO of donor funds? What happened to the fourteen Water Bowsers donated to the Ministry of Water Resources by UNICEF?
The Minister should stop inciting some irresponsible Civil Society members against the Management of Guma Valley Water Company when he knows that, the problems of Guma are beyond the control of one man, Bankole Mansaray.
Thankfully, President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma fully understands the challenges in the water sector. He served as Board Chairman of Guma Valley Water Company under the leadership of the SLPP government headed by the late President Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah.
We call on Momodu Maligi to stop this pettiness of inciting people to undermine the Management of Guma Valley Water Company. As Minister of Water Resources, If Guma fails, he fails.
Once again, we call on some of the Civil Society activists to stop being used by some selfish Politicians fighting personal battles.
We return to the question: Why does Momodu Maligi want Bankole Mansaray replaced at Guma Valley Water Company?
