Speaking at the APC Emergency Delegates Conference in Makeni on Friday, 17th September, 2021 the party’s National Chairman and Leader, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma disclosed that he was retiring from active party politics to concentrate on his role as an Elderly Statesman.

Former President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma has served as the APC party Chairman and Leader for almost nineteen years. Eleven of those years were served as President of the Republic of Sierra Leone (2007 to 2018).

In 2007, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma defeated the SLPP flag bearer, Solomon Berewa to become President of Sierra Leone. He won re-election in 2012 when, according to NEC (National Electoral Commission), he defeated the SLPP Presidential candidate, Julius Maada Bio.

The APC party held a two-day Emergency National Delegates’ Conference at the Party’s regional office in Makeni (17th-19th September) to adopt their draft new Constitution.

President Koroma in his capacity as Chairman and Leader was invited to chair the opening session of the party’s Emergency National Delegates’ Conference. He called on party members and supporters to be law-abiding and unite.

President Koroma did not give any exact date on which he would announce his retirement from party politics. There are strong indications that he might step down from his current role as party Chairman and Leader after the party would have elected their standard bearer for the 2023 Presidential election.

Meanwhile, the issue of VP Alhaji Chief Sam Sumana’s return to the APC party remains the biggest elephant in the room. It was not on the cards in Makeni at the weekend.
