House Speaker, Honourable Dr. Abass Chernor Bundu has apologized to Sierra Leoneans following an unusual battle that broke out among Members of Parliament during a Parliamentary proceeding on an inglorious day.
The infamous incident which dominated proceedings at the Bintumani Hotel Conference Center in Freetown on Monday 19th April, ended rather inclusively when the Attorney General and Minister of Justice laid the 2002 Census Act before Members of the country’s supreme law making authority, before MPs of the main opposition APC party challenged the legality of the emergency sitting called by President Julius Maada Bio, citing lack of consultation.
Speaking at a Parliamentary preceding yesterday at the Bintumani Hotel Conference Center in Freetown, the Speaker expressed hope, and promised that Sierra Leoneans will not experience a recurrence of such an incident where MPs exchanged invectives at each other, as he beseeched his colleagues to put on the best of behaviours expected of Members of the House of Representatives.
Dr. Abass Bundu said what happened on that day was not unique to the country’s supreme law making body, and said the incident was part of a democratic process.
However, the Leader of the Opposition, Honourable Chernor Maju Bah said that their position on that inglorious day remains the same.
Meanwhile, members of the opposition only have 21 days to raise a motion calling for the annulment of the instrument before it becomes law.
The next Parliamentary sitting is scheduled for May 10th, 2021 at the Bintumani Conference Center in Freetown.
