The race for the Southern Regional Chair of the ruling SLPP could be won even before the seat is declared vacant as senior stakeholders in the region continue to pledge their support to the only candidate that has so far naturally emerged for the position.
Mansa Alhaji Kanja Sesay who is gunning for the regional chair of the party in the South has received what many say is “an unprecedented and an overwhelming endorsement” from stakeholders in all the four districts in the region.
Inside sources told Global Times that the outpouring of endorsements and support for the Energy Minister have sent other would-be candidates shivering with a vow not to test the resolve of the vast majority of party stalwarts in the region that is considered the heartbeat of the SLPP.
Alhaji Kanja Sesay, a battle tested and a shrewd politician of his generation is reputed as one of the brains behind the electoral success of President Julius Maada Bio in April 2018. He has so far said very little about his candidacy except a vow to take the party closer to the people when elected as the Regional Chairman for the South.
Stakeholders who have already pledged their support to Alhaji Kanja Sesay who is also the Mandingo National President say he is better positioned to handle the affairs of the party at that level.
As in Pujehun last week where stakeholders were jostling to be granted the right to nominate their man at the regional convention later this month, so was in Moyamba on Monday where the newly re-elected Moyamba District SLPP Chairman, Smart Senesie took no chances as he bestowed himself the right to champion the well-coordinated campaign of Alhaji Kanja Sesay.
The Monday declaration in Moyamba was attended by the Resident Minister South, Mohamed E. K. Alie and was also graced by Members of Parliament from the region. Also in attendance were, Mr. Moses Probyn of Bonthe District and Ambassador Eddie Massally of Pujehun District who alongside their Districts and Constituency Delegates endorsed openly Alhaji Kanja Sesay.
