The Ministry of Youth Affairs under the leadership of the current Minister of Youth Affairs, Mohamed Bangura, has seen remarkable achievements.
Considering the vital role of the ministry in transforming the country’s youthful population, the appointment of Mohamed Orman Bangura by the government to head such a sensitive ministry, has received international commendations as donor partners continue to support various reforms under the ministry.
Seeing the need to get the regulatory framework of the youth sector right, Mohamed Bangura facilitated the revision of the National Youth Policy, the National Youth Service, and reviewed the National Youth Commission Act.
Other reforms currently being initiated by the Ministry includes the Criminal Procedure Amendment Act, the Sentencing Guidelines Regulations in progress and Traffic Offenses Act 2007 and the Regulations of 2011 since most of those laws are not favorable to youths.
The Youth Empowerment & Employment scheme introduced by the Minister, has seen the empowerment of over five hundred youths that have benefited from various trainings on the operations of farm and heavy equipment under the Ministry.
With the establishment of car wash centres across the country, chiefdom farms, the National Youth Service, training of 40 innovators on entrepreneurship and startup kits, the Youth Konnect projects to name few, youths have been well positioned by the ministry to take up various leadership roles in the country. Most of the beneficiaries, have gained employments with multinational companies in various sectors, there by living decent life in society.
The Youth in Fisheries project could be described as one of the most successful project launched by the New Direction government.
With the provisions of fishing boats and ancillaries by the Ministry, fishing has become a lucrative business in Sierra Leone and has provided economic livelihood for those engage in the trade.
With these ongoing reforms at the Ministry, donor partners feeling satisfied, have doubled their support to the Ministry more than ever because of the transparency and accountability demonstrated by the Minister.
