The Elections Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL) has announced that it will review the division of constituency boundaries and wards this year as provided for in section 38 (4) of the 1991 Constitution.
Speaking at the third Elections Steering Committee Meeting held at the Bintumani Hotel in Freetown on Friday, the Chief Electoral Commissioner of the ECSL, Mohamed Kenewui Konneh announced that the provisional results of the 2021 Mid-Term Population and Housing Census have increased the country’s total population and significantly shifted it at the district level in Sierra Leone.
Therefore, the Electoral Commission is mandated to review the division of Sierra Leone into constituencies at intervals not less than five years and not more than seven years, according to Section 38 (4) of the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone.
Commissioner Konneh announced that the Electoral Commission will review the division of Sierra Leone into constituencies using the five-year minimum interval, after setting up an internal Boundary Delimitation Committee to facilitate the review processes.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission will use the results of the 2021 Mid-Term Population and Housing Census to conduct the review of boundaries and has requested Statistics Sierra Leone to provide the data for it.
However, the Electoral Commission is also working with the National Civil Registration Authority (NCRA) on the inter-institutional arrangements for the extraction of civil registration data and provision of civil registration staff and registration kits to update the Register of Voters.
Sierra Leoneโ€™s population now sits at 7,541,641, with the most populous district being Kenema with 772,472, closely followed by Bo District with 756,975, according to the provisional results released by Statistics Sierra Leone on May 31 this year
