In the aftermath of the violent protests on August 10, 2022, Deen Kanu, a staunch supporter of the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) party, finds himself at the center of a contentious police crackdown.

According to Fuad, the raid was traumatic and excessive. “They arrested me and detained me for ten days simply because they couldn’t find my son,” he revealed. The ordeal didn’t end there. Deen’s siblings, Adamsay and Hawa Kanu, were also subjected to brutal physical assaults during the raid. “My children were mercilessly beaten,” Fuad added, his voice laden with anguish.
The police’s determination to capture Deen has forced him into hiding. A close friend, John, disclosed that Deen has fled the country, fearing for his life. If apprehended, Deen could face severe consequences, including imprisonment or even death, as tensions between opposition activists and government authorities continue to escalate.
The August 10 protest has left an indelible mark on the nation. While many participated to voice frustrations over governance, the violent turn of events has further deepened divisions. The opposition APC has criticized the government’s heavy-handed response, accusing it of using the protest as a pretext to suppress dissent.
Meanwhile, human rights advocates are calling for a thorough investigation into the events of August 10 and the subsequent actions of law enforcement. “The targeting of individuals based on their political affiliation is a clear violation of democratic principles,” said a representative from a local rights organization.
As Deen Kanu remains on the run, his case highlights the growing tensions and challenges faced by opposition members in the current political climate. For Fuad Kanu, however, the focus remains on his son’s safety. “All I want is for my son to be safe. He is not a criminal; he simply stood up for what he believes in.”
