The Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission Sierra Leone, Patricia Narsu Ndanema, has on behalf of the Commission expressed how proud, happy and excited she has been for being accredited Status “A’ for the third consecutive time by the Sub Committee on Accreditation being a component of the United Nations.
“As a Commission, we want to use this opportunity to recognize the continued support of the Government of Sierra Leone for providing funding for our operations in accordance with the UN Paris Principles of 1993…We also want to recognize the tremendous support of our international and local partners i.e. the UNDP, Irish Aid, UNFPA, OSTWA, the District Human Right Committees, Ministries, Departments and Agencies, Civil Society Organizations in the Commission’s Referral Partnership Forum and the Human Rights Working Group that includes a wide range of human rights actors”, Madam Ndanema noted.
She maintained that, for the Sub Committee on Accreditation to designate the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone with a Grade ‘A’ status means that the Commission has over the past five years demonstrated a high degree of autonomy and has been fully compliant with the provisions highlighted in the UN Paris Principles of 1993 that establishes and governs the operations of national human rights institutions of UN Member States.
The Chairperson of the country’s Human Rights Commission further explained that some of the benefits of being a
Grade A’ Status Human Rights Commission. Among them she pointed are: A-status Commissions have specific participation rights in UN processes and mechanisms, the Commission can be a member of the Coordinating Committee and is also eligible to be a member of the Sub Committee on Accreditation.
“We can also hold offices in the bureau of the Sub Committee on Accreditation, the Commission will be in a position to fully participate in International and regional meetings and will enjoy voting rights and be voted for to hold governance positions in
human rights networks such as the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI), ECONET being the Network for Human Rights Institution-West African, the Commonwealth Forum for National Human Rights Institutions and the Global Alliance for National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI)”, she added.
She concluded by assuring the public of the Commission’s unwavering commitment to the protection and promotion of the Human Rights of all in Sierra Leone.
