There are four main MNOs (Mobile Network Operators) in Sierra Leone. Orange (SL) Limited and Africell (SL) Limited are the largest mobile operators in the country. They are one of the biggest employers and largest tax payers in Sierra Leone.
Since 2017, Mobile Network Operators in Sierra Leone have not increased their tariffs despite the cost of operation going up exponentially. For instance, in 2017, the exchange rate of US$1 was Le7, 250 (Old Leones). Today, it is Le18,000 (Old Leones) to US$1.
Increase in fuel cost and cost of electricity have also seen a major challenge. They pose some serious financial challenge to the operations of MNOs.
Zoodlabs (SL) Limited have increased the cost of 1mbps from Le8 (Old Leones) to Le13 (Old Leones) per MB. Thatโ€™s a 63% increase. Leoncom have also increased the cost of mbps from US$4 to US$10 per mbps. Thatโ€™s 2,400% increase. The current rate of inflation stands at 33%, according to Bank of Sierra Leone record.
All said and done, MNOs may be justified in adjusting their tariffs because the cost of operations from 2017 to date has skyrocketed.
In order to continue to do business and in order not to embark on retrenchment, MNOs might increase their tariffs before the end of 2022.
