Three days from today (3rd March) His Excellency President Brig. (Rtd) Julius Maada Bio will be commissioning the brand new Freetown International Airport at Lungi. This is a major accomplishment. With less than five years in office, President Bio has presided over the construction of a brand new international airport with state-of-the-art facilities and technology in Sierra Leone.
With less than five years in office, President Bio has been the first head of state of Sierra Leone and the second in Africa to emerge as the winner of the prestigious โAfrican of the Yearโ award. This is a remarkable achievement.
In less than five years in office, President Brig. (Rtd) Julius Maada Bio has taken big and bold decisions in the best interests of the country. The President has repealed Part V of the Public Order Act of 1965, he has abolished the death penalty, he has introduced the free quality education program and he has tackled the perennial electricity outages in Freetown, Bo, Kenema, Kono and Makeni. He has embarked on the electrification of major district headquarter towns. President Bio has signed into law the Gender Equality and Womenโs Empowerment Act. The President has this year doubled the annual subvention paid to the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ).
Very recently, and for the first time in the history of Sierra Leone, President Bio commissioned the Foreign Service Academy. This is a momentous achievement.
Even in the middle of a global financial crisis and pandemic, President Bio was able to preside over a stable economy. Salaries continued to be paid, Sierra Leone has not defaulted in its external debt payments and hospitals continue to be regularly supported with essential drugs. This is a clear show of strong and astute leadership.
President Bioโs record of remarkable accomplishments is an open book. Decent Sierra Leoneans are proud of President Bioโs selfless leadership style.
