Following serious allegations of harassment of and extortion from some members of the Indian business community in Liberia, the Indian Government wasted no time to terminate the appointment of Upjit Singh Sachdeva (Jetty) as Honorary Consul General of India in Monrovia, Liberia.
Upjit Singh Sachdeva (Jetty) was accused of using his influence in the Liberian government of President George Weah to harass, blackmail, intimidate and extort money from several Indian businessmen in Liberia. On one occasion, he falsely accused an Indian national, Manoj Kumar Vatwani of being a threat to the national security of Liberia.
For almost thirty-one months now, Manoj Kumar has not been allowed to return to Liberia even though the Liberian Embassy in Freetown has issued him a valid entry visa to return to the country. This has created a serious diplomatic embarrassment for the Liberian Embassy in Freetown. Manoj’s wife and daughter are lawfully living in Liberia. Jetty is using the Liberia Immigration Service to block Manoj from returning to Liberia. He accused Manoj of exposing him to the Indian Government which led to the termination of his appointment as Honorary Consul General.
Jetty is allegedly using his money and influence to pay some senior Liberian government officials to block some Indian businessmen from opening businesses in Liberia in order to maintain his monopoly and dominance of business in the country.
Manoj Kumar is presently stranded in Sierra Leone because Jetty has used his influence in the Liberian government to block him from returning to the country.
Manoj has offered to return to Monrovia to face the trump up charges against him. But the Liberian Immigration Service has refused to allow him entry even though their Embassy in Freetown has issued him a valid entry visa with visa number LEF100-21.
Several attempts made to contact Jetty proved unsuccessful last night.
Investigations continue.
