His Excellency President Dr Julius Maada Bio has departed the shores of Sierra Leone for Abuja, Nigeria to attend the ECOWAS Heads of State Extraordinary Summit on the Political Situation in the Republic of Niger scheduled to take place today.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) convened the Extraordinary Summit of the Authority on the political situation in the Republic of Niger.
The ECOWAS leaders will be considering and discussing the political situation and recent developments in Niger during the Summit.
According to an ECOWAS Press Release dated 8th August 2023 โECOWAS Commission wishes to inform that the ECOWAS-AU-UN Mission to the Republic of Niger did not take place on Tuesday, 8 August 2023โฆThe mission was aborted following a late-night communication from the military authorities in Niger indicating their unavailability to receive the tripartite delegationโ.
The planned mission was part of the continued efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the current crisis in Niger. As per the decision of the ECOWAS Extraordinary Summit held on 30 July 2023, the Community will continue to deploy all measures in order to restore constitutional order in Niger.
