The World Bank Country Director for Ghana, Sierra Leone and Liberia, Pierre Laporte, yesterday met with the Minister and Management of the Ministry of Finance as part of his two-day working visit to Sierra Leone to discuss current and future engagements with the Bank.

In his statement, Pierre Laporte thanked the Minister and his team for the meeting and engagements with the Bank.

He hoped for the continuation of a very cordial relationship between the World Bank and Sierra Leone.

He commended the government for the improvement in last year’s disbursement rate in the project portfolio and the various reforms undertaken by the government.

Mr Laporte further informed the Minister that the Bank wants to deepen ties with the government on improving the country’s Macro and Micro economic fundamentals.

Minister of Finance Sheku Fantamadi Bangura welcomed the Country Director by stating that the government has expanded the uptake of the World Bank resources in the last few years, with improvement in the disbursement rate in the Bankโ€™s portfolio.

He explained the several reforms the government is undertaking to increase revenue generation, improve fiscal consolidation, reduce the budget deficit and public debt, and simultaneously consolidate spending in social sectors like Education, Health and Food Security.

Minister Bangura provided a brief overview of the macro-fiscal situation in 2022 and the first half of 2023.

He also informed him of the Big Five Agenda of the government and how the government intends to engage partners to align their programmes to support this agenda.

During his stay in Freetown, Pierre Laporte is expected to meet with President Dr Julius Maada Bio, the Chief Minister and other government Ministers, the Governor of the Bank of Sierra Leone and other development partner organisations in Sierra Leone.
