The Director General of the National Civil Registration Authority (NCRA), Mohamed Mubashir Massaquoi, has informed stakeholders in a Steering Committee Meeting that the National Civil Registration Authority (NCRA) which was established by the National Civil Registration Act 2016 provides for the continuous universal, permanent and compulsory recoding of occurrence and characteristics of vital events including live birth, death, foetal death, marriage, divorce, annulment of marriage, judicial separation of marriage, adoption, legitimization and recognition of citizens and residents throughout Sierra Leone for the purpose of establishing and maintaining a permanent civil register of vital events.
Speaking to gathering of stakeholders on Thursday 28th September, 2023 at Shangri La Hotel, Lumley Beach in Freetown, Mr. Massaquoi said they develop and maintain accurate electronic database of the population of Sierra Leone. “We issue National Identification Numbers to every citizen and residents in Sierra Leone…We provide accurate information about civil status events such as births, adoptions, marriage, divorce and deathโ.
In his update on legal reforms, the NCRA Director General said they have drafted a review of the National Civil Registration Act, drafted Vital Statistics Regulation, drafted National Identification Number Regulation, drafted National Identify Card Regulation and Civil Registration Regulation.
