Waterloo resident Foday Obenzo Sawanneh, an 17-year-old, is currently a fugitive following his escape from prison during the November 26th, 2023 attempted coup in Sierra Leone.
Foday, the son of Ishaka Sawanneh, a staunch member of the All People’s Congress (APC) party, was initially arrested during the contentious August 10th, 2022 protests. His arrest stemmed from allegations that he was involved with APC members purportedly seeking to overthrow President Julius Maada Bio. Tragically, Ishaka Sawanneh was killed during the failed coup in the country, compounding the family’s grief and fueling concerns about political tensions in the region.
Following his escape, Foday’s image was prominently featured on a wanted list released by the Sierra Leone Police, intensifying the search for his recapture. His uncle, Mohamed Sawanneh, confirmed that law enforcement has conducted numerous searches for Foday, including several unauthorized entries into their family home in Waterloo. While acknowledging that Foday has fled the country, Mohamed Sawanneh declined to disclose his nephew’s current location, stating only that he hopes for his safety and does not wish for his return to Sierra Leone. The uncle also expressed deep concern about the continued police presence and search efforts at his home.
The August 10th protests, during which Foday and his father were caught up, were marked by widespread civil unrest and violence. The demonstrations, ostensibly triggered by rising living costs and economic hardship, quickly escalated into clashes between protesters and security forces. Accusations of political manipulation and excessive force by the government marred the events, leading to numerous arrests and fatalities, including Ishaka Sawanneh. The protests deepened existing political divisions and highlighted the fragility of Sierra Leone’s democratic institutions. The protests were also accused of being politically motivated by members of the opposition party.
The November 26th attempted coup, during which Foday escaped, further destabilized the nation. This incident involved armed individuals who attacked military armories and attempted to seize control of key government installations. The coup attempt, though ultimately thwarted by security forces, revealed significant vulnerabilities within the country’s security apparatus and raised serious questions about political stability. The failed coup also escalated fears of political violence. Many observers believe that the coup was a direct attempt to take advantage of the political unrest caused by the August 10th protests.
The connection between the August 10th protests and the November 26th coup attempt remains a subject of intense scrutiny. Critics argue that the government’s handling of the protests, including the arrests and alleged use of excessive force, created an environment ripe for further destabilization. The escape of individuals like Foday Sawanneh, who was initially arrested during the protests, raises concerns about potential links between the two events. The ongoing police search and the family’s fears reflect the heightened political tensions and the precarious security situation in Sierra Leone.
