The Speaker of the House of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Dr. Abass Chernor Bundu, has reportedly announced his voluntary retirement from office effective 30th April, 2024.
The Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Sengepor Solomon Thomas will act as Speaker of Parliament until a substantive Speaker is elected.
The position of Speaker will be fiercely contested. So far, the two leading candidates are the Deputy (now Acting) Speaker, Hon. Sengepor Thomas and the former Speaker of the sub-regional ECOWAS Parliament, Hon. Dr. Sidie Mohamed Tunis. Hon. Sidie Tunis is the longest-serving member in the current Parliament. He is referred to as “The Father of the House”.
Many people believe that, the new Speaker would be elected (selected) on a consensus basis. High-level consultations for the election (selection) of a new Speaker are underway.
