A high level delegation led by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Major General David Taluva (Rtd), the IGP William Fayia Sellu, Deputy Minister of Justice Alpha Sesay, UNDP Resident Representative to Sierra Leone, Fredrick Hans Ampiah and a host of other senior Police Officers has returned from a successful trip to Ghana to chat the way forward in transforming the Sierra Leone Police into a modern Police Service.
On Monday, 13th August 2024, a Guard of Honour Parade was mounted for Sierra Leoneโs Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu by Ghanaโs Police IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare at the forecourt of the National Police Headquarters in Accra.
Welcoming his counterpart and the rest of the delegation, IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare said that he was excited about their visit noting that it is important for the security agencies on the continent to be engaging among themselves.
He said the Ghana Police aims to win the hearts and minds of the people by being the servant of the people as it ought to be.
He noted initiatives such as the Snatch Them Young Policing which targets school children, scaled up intelligence-led operations, and enhanced visibility as a few of the policies making the difference.
For his part, IGP Sellu thanked his colleague for their kind hospitality and open-door policy to allow them to compare notes to foster effective policing in their respective countries and the sub-region. He promised to work diligently with all sectors to transform the Sierra Leone Police into a modern Police Service.
The Minister of Internal Affairs of Sierra Leone, Major General David Taluva (Rtd) said the quality of the Ghana Police Service has become the standard in Policing in Africa.
According to him, other African countries including Sierra Leone are willing to learn from the innovation and practical leadership that has been in charge of the transformation happening in the Police Service in recent years.
Speaking at the Police headquarters in Accra on Monday, August 12, 2024, the Minister who led a delegation of senior police officers including the Sierra Leonean IGP to Ghana said they were in Accra to learn from their Ghanaian counterparts.
The delegation also met with Ghana’s Attorney General & Minister of Justice, Mr. Godfred Yeboah Dame, to share experiences and insights on transforming the Sierra Leone Police into a modern Police Service.
According to Sierra Leone’s Deputy Minister of Justice Ahmed Sesay, transitioning our Police Force into a Police Service is tied to our justice delivery process.
โWe have a productive engagement with Ghanaโs AG & Minister of Justice on the interaction between the justice sector & the Police Serviceโ he said.
According to UNDP Resident Representative to Sierra Leone, Fredrick Hans Ampiah, this mission is a crucial step towards sharing experiences to enable the transition of the Sierra Leone Police Force into a Police Service.
He further noted that, he was happy for a regional collaboration for law enforcement transformation in action. As Sierra Leone’s Minister for Internal Affairs, Maj Gen (Rtd) David Taluva, has met with his Ghanaian counterpart, Hon Henry Quartey, to learn from Ghana’s successful transition from Police Force to Police Service.
