Women Network for Environmental Sustainability (WoNES) has organised a two-day discussion on climate change advocacy and a policy dialogue workshop.
The event which took place on September 11 and 12, 2024 at the Family Kingdom in Freetown, brought together diverse stakeholders in environmental issues in the country.
According to the organisers, the workshop sought to enhance understanding of robust policies and establish advocacy groups in communities and build the capacity of these groups to advocate for climate change.
With funding from Christian Aid Sierra Leone, the overall objective of the workshop was to enhance the knowledge and understanding of stakeholders in Pujehun and the Western Area Rural District on advocacy skills and existing policies relating to climate change adaptation and sustainable energy and to create a network of climate change platforms in communities.
The Women’s Network for Environmental Sustainability (WoNES), is a registered non-governmental organisation working in Sierra Leone since December 2013.
WoNES is one of the Christian Aid Sierra Leoneโ€™s (CASL) partners, leading the Climate Change Adaptation and Sustainable Energy (CCASE) project based on their experience working on climate change, environmental sustainability, and women’s empowerment issues over the last ten years.
WoNES is leading on project planning and implementation, working with other CSOs and the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change to deliver a robust climate justice advocacy and community mitigation and adaptation set of interventions rooted in learning in Western Area Rural and Pujehun Districts.
Climate change is one of the most pressing global challenges of this time, affecting ecosystems, economies, and communities in Sierra Leone.
The increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and shifting climate patterns underscore the urgent need for comprehensive and coordinated action.
Effective advocacy and policy dialogue are essential to drive meaningful change and implement sustainable solutions.
