The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Alhaji Timothy Musa Kabba, yesterday clarified that, Sierra Leoneโs Ambassador to Guinea, Alimamy Hassan Bangura was not under house arrest in Conakry. He said the Ambassador was free and was going about his normal business.
The Foreign Minister however, added that, the Ambassador has been urgently recalled to Freetown to provide a full account of the incident. The Head of Chancery has also been recalled for consultation.
It is alleged by the Government of Guinea that, a utility vehicle belonging to the Embassy of Sierra Leone in Conakry was impounded on suspicion of transporting substances suspected to be cocaine. The driver and another occupant of the vehicle were being held by the Guinean authorities pending the outcome of an in-depth investigation.
Meanwhile, the Foreign Minister has further clarified that, the Ambassador was not a subject of the investigation. He said, the Ambassador was merely recalled to give a full account of how an official vehicle belonging to the Embassy came to be impounded by Guinean authorities for carrying seven suitcases of contraband substances.
Ambassador Alimamy Bangura is expected in Freetown by the weekend, according to sources at the Foreign Ministry in Freetown
