In the wake of contentious lower-level elections in Kono District, SLPP Chairman Saffea Lesley Moiwa is reaffirming his commitment to promoting peace and unity, even as the community confronts a petition demanding electoral transparency and accountability.
Following the Sierra Leone People’s Party lower-level elections, several petitions have been submitted to the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC), the designated authority for handling issues related to petitions in political party elections in Sierra Leone. In response, the PPRC summoned the District Chairman of the SLPP in Kono District.
On Tuesday, the District Chairman appeared before the PPRC, supported by a large crowd gathered outside the PPRC building on Tower Hill in Freetown in a show of solidarity.
Speaking to this medium, Saffea Lesley Moiwa acknowledged the concerns raised in the petition, emphasizing his commitment to fully cooperate with the PPRC regarding the outcome of their engagement.
“I received instructions to distribute the party cards to the Constituency Chairmen, who were then to pass them on to the Chiefdom Chairmen, and subsequently to the Sectional Chairmen,” Moiwa explained. He noted, however, that the intended recipients did not receive the cards as planned; instead, they were sold to individuals who were expected to vote in favor of certain candidates, neglecting support for incumbents who lacked backing.
Moiwa revealed that the partyโ€™s structures have established a complaint committee in Kenema, but the opposing party did not attend scheduled dialogues there. He expressed gratitude to the PPRC for their forthcoming verdict and reiterated his willingness to accept any decision made, acknowledging the PPRC’s lawful authority.
“I will do everything in my power to ensure peace reigns in the District,” he assured, urging party members to remain peaceful and to await the PPRC’s verdict.
District Secretary of the SLPP, Sheik Abu Bakarr Koroma, also spoke to this medium, expressing contentment with the opportunity to appear before the party and reaffirming their commitment to abide by any decision issued by the PPRC. He emphasized the importance of maintaining peaceful elections in the District moving forward, despite allegations that some Constituency Chairmen violated election rules.
Haja Martha Baraytay, the Womenโ€™s Leader of the SLPP, contended that the petition is unfounded, arguing that the District Chairman fulfilled his obligations by distributing the party cards to the Constituency Chairmen. She praised Moiwa for his leadership and contributions to the District.
