Soldiers and their dependants at Wilberforce, Juba and Murray Town Barracks can now breathe a sigh of relief as the perennial water crisis in these various Army barracks is now a thing of the past, as the Deputy Minister of Defence Col. (Rtd) MB Massaquoi on Tuesday, 4th March, 2025 did a symbolic commissioning of solar powered Boreholes newly constructed by Molina Construction Company.
Prior to this new development, the water crisis at the Wilberforce Barracks is a long standing issue which has impacted negatively on some of the children of soldiers as they usually spend odd hours in search of affordable water which has made most of them not to study at night.
This new development was initiated by MoD/RSLAF Senior Management as promised by the CDS of the RSLAF Maj. Gen Amara Idara Bangura during his maiden address to soldiers deployed in Western Area at the Dr. Julius Maada Bio Parade Square formerly Hockey Pitch in January, this year.
The leadership of MoD/RSLAF administration places welfare issues of soldiers as a priority and are determined to quickly address the acute water shortage among the welfare issues faced by soldiers and their dependants in the barracks.
The CDS with the support of the Deputy Minister of Defence constructed 4 Boreholes at Murray Town Barracks, 5 Boreholes at Juba Barracks and 10 Boreholes at Wilberforce Barracks in just three months in office as the CDS of RSLAF.
Welcoming guests at the commissioning ceremony, the Commander of the 3rd Infantry Brigade , Col. MM Kposowa, assured all the guests that they were gathered to commission the Boreholes constructed at Wilberforce Barracks and other locations.
He thanked the Deputy Minister of Defence and the Director General Ministry of Defence Mr Gilbert Cooper for supporting the initiative of the CDS Maj. Gen. AI Bangura.
In his statement, the CEO of Maliba Construction Company Mr. Mohamed A. Bangura advised that there should be a team to manage the newly constructed water system and that they should ensure they have a time schedule for one day in and one day out for the running of the taps for durability and the operational effectiveness of the Boreholes, he stressed
He made a special recognition of Lt. MF Nabieu for his supervisory role and dedication to his supporting duties for the construction.
The Chief of Army Staff Brig. Gen. KT Sesay praised the leadership style of the senior Management of MoD/RSLAF and assured that it is based on welfare centric that seeks to improve on the welfare of the personnel and the provision of water in various barracks.
Brig. Gen Sesay said this water project will not just stop here as they have plans to extend it to other barracks
He spoke about the prolonged struggle for water in the barracks and therefore admonished the soldiers and their dependants to take good care of the facilities to ensure that they last for years in good condition.
