His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio on Saturday, 24th October, 2025 officially opened the Maternal Centre of Excellence in Kono, marking a major milestone in Sierra Leoneโs efforts to improve maternal and child healthcare across the country.
The newly commissioned state-of-the-art facility stands as a symbol of hope and commitment to reducing maternal mortality and promoting safer childbirth. President Bio reaffirmed his governmentโs dedication to ensuring that โevery woman deserves safe childbirth and every child a healthy start in life.โ
Over the years, Sierra Leone has achieved significant progress, reducing maternal mortality by an impressive 70 percent. However, the President emphasized that the work is far from over, noting that the new centre will serve as a cornerstone for further improvements in womenโs and childrenโs health outcomes.
The Maternal Centre of Excellence was developed in collaboration with Partners In Health (PIH) and other development partners, whose continuous support the President acknowledged with gratitude.
โThis centre represents our collective determination to provide world-class healthcare to mothers and families, especially in underserved regions like Kono. Together, we are building a stronger, healthier Sierra Leone,โ President Bio said.
The project aligns with the governmentโs Free Quality Health Care initiative and broader national development goals aimed at ensuring equitable access to essential health services for all citizens.
