On Saturday, 25th October 2025, at RAMSY head office, No 14 Liverpool Street in Freetown, it was a joyous moment for two Medical Laboratory workers of one of the leading mining companies, Sierra Rutile Limited (SRL), Abu Sillah and Sahr Nganga, who received certificates from a Consultant of the laboratory, Haja Professor Isata Wurie, having gone through six weeks intensive training and lectures on laboratory studies in handling and operating modern equipment on day to day work.
The certification exercise was witnessed by several medical personalities including one of the Board members of RAMSY, Dr. Evon Harding, the Matron of SRL Hospital, Madam Haja Aminata Sheku, Practice Manager of SRL, Mohamed Tejan Jalloh and other workers of the company, journalists and staff members of RAMSY.
In his welcome address, the Managing Director of RAMSY, Dr. Abass Wurie said that the institution has been engaged on Clinical Diagnostics for over thirty years. He added that RAMSY does biological analysis, DNA and Cancer tests, Scans, Water test, and offers Internship for schools and colleges, among others.
According to Dr. Wurie, the relationship with SRL started with a consultancy work, and being that the companyโ€™s medical facility is serving huge population in that part of the country and beyond, RAMSY thought it fit and correct to go beyond the initial service provided to accept to train the medical personnel of SRL.
Dr. Wurie went on that the two laboratory medical personnel of the SRL went through six weeks of intensive training and lecturing, spending time with each of the department they went through, adding that to his estimation, the certificated men need more training to cope and know how to deal with modern equipment in the lab. He assured that the men left the institution with knowledge and understanding.
โ€œRAMSY was part and parcel of the Committee that drew up the curriculum for UNIMARK, FBC, MTU and COHMAS. The institution is working alongside with all these tertiary institutions,โ€ Dr. Wurie said.
He also told the gathering that RAMSY workers and management were very pleased with good characters exhibited by the two men during the six weeks training and hopes that the partnership with SRL will continue. He ended by congratulating the two certificated persons and wished them well in their work.
One of the trainers, who is the Head of Department for Molecular Biology and Genetics, Julian S O Campbell, reemphasized that both Abu Sillah and Sahr Nganga went through six weeks intensive training to know how to operate modern equipment in the lab.
Campbell brought to the attention of the two men that even though SRL is a company operating to maximize profit, they should do their work with quality and profession, as they need to bridge the gap between the theory and practice.
He encouraged them to support career growth, build on capacity, adapt to technological development and new methods and innovation, among others.
โ€œWithout accurate information from the lab, a doctor will be working as a blind man. Laboratory work is a team work for better results,โ€ Campbell remarked.
A representative from SRL, Mohamed Tejan Jalloh said that the company is in possession of advanced equipment. He stated that some of the medical staff working at the companyโ€™s hospital are just graduates from high schools without any practical medical training in the field. He added that this is one of the reasons why the company hung heads with RAMSY to open up training for them, stressing that 21,000 patients visit the companyโ€™s hospital for treatment and medical examination.
โ€œEven after the company would have folded, those capacitated will remain to contribute to the economic growth of Sierra Leone,โ€ Jalloh said.
He concluded by thanking RAMSY for capacitating the two workers and hope that the good relationship will continue to grow.
Madam Jeneba Musa also spoke about quality management system and to have respect for everyone in life. She called on the two men to work as a team, stressing that they should apply innovative idea in solving problems.
