Consequent on its mandate “to create and sustain awareness within the society of the principles and objectives of the Constitution as the fundamental law of the land” and “to educate and encourage the public to defend the Constitution at all times against all forms of abuse and violations”, the National Commission for Democracy (herein referred to as NCD) appreciates the Government for the publication of the Whitepaper on the Constitutional Review Process (CRP).
“It is the reasoned view of NCD that raising awareness on the document is in the best interest of the public as the citizenry are accorded the opportunity to be fully aware of the provisions as recommended by the Constitutional Review Committee (CRC) and those approved in the Government whitepaper”, said in its press release issued yesterday Monday 17th January, 2022.
The release furthermore explained that, the Commission is of the firm conviction that the Reviewed or New Constitution should reflects the wishes and aspirations of the citizenry, hence the need for a wider awareness-raising campaign to keep the citizenry fully informed about the provisions therein.
“NCD looks forward to collaborating with other players, including state and non-state actors, to support Government in the process of actualizing the Constitutional Review Process even as it has commenced the due processes to be followed in the amendment and/or review of the Constitution with a view to enhancing the legitimacy of the related processes”, they noted
