Phase Two of the voter registration exercise commenced across the country yesterday morning. Turnout at several registration centres in Bombali district was low, according to ECSL Registration Officers interviewed in and around Makeni and Kamabia. This is mainly due to the huge turnout during the first phase of the exercise.
Several voter registration centres visited yesterday in Makeni City were up and running without any reported incident of malfunctioning equipment.
Registration Officers at several centres in Makeni and its surrounding environs confirmed that they have had no problem with the voter verification kits, voter identification units and the fingerprint scanners. “Everything is working well…We have no challenges here”, the Registration Officer at Centre Number 04159, Emmanuel Konjor confirmed.
Another Registration Officer, Ibrahim Jalloh, of Centre Number 4193 in Makeni city confirmed that they have had no incident at their centre. “As you can see, things are really peaceful here…The process is going on smoothly and security is watertight…No underage registration is allowed here…The Party Agents (APC and SLPP) have been very vigilant and watchful”, Mr Jalloh confirmed.
The Party Agents for the APC and the SLPP confirmed that their centres had been very peaceful since they opened at 7am yesterday. “All the voter registration equipment are working very well”, they acknowledged.
During the first phase of the voter registration exercise, the Northern Region recorded a total of 241,827 registered voters. The low turnout in several registration centres in Bombali district yesterday shows that majority of the eligible voters have already registered with ECSL.
Elections are scheduled to take place on 24th June, 2023.
