Purposeful, an Africa-rooted global hub for girls’ organizing and activism, together with 27 organizations in Sierra Leone, has signed a position statement strongly urging the Parliament of Sierra Leone to repeal a colonial-era law. The statement calls for the safety and justice of all women and girls and advocates for the swift passage of the Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Healthcare Act, 2024 that was presented to parliament on the 17th December 2024.
This position statement is endorsed by 28 feminist movement partners, united in their commitment to ensuring that women and girls in Sierra Leone can live in safety, dignity, and freedom. It is a powerful call to action, emphasizing the responsibility of Parliamentarians to protect women and girls and to enshrine this protection in law.
The passage of the Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Healthcare Act, 2024 represents a monumental and progressive step forward for the country. It seeks to abolish a centuries-old law, eliminating an outdated remnant of Sierra Leone’s colonial past. This achievement reflects the national and international commitment of President Julius Maada Bio, who has consistently affirmed the necessity of safeguarding the lives of women and girls.
