Police have confirmed the arrest and detention of fourteen employees of Pee Cee and Sons for stealing property belonging to the company. They appeared at the Ross Road Magistrate Court yesterday but they were denied bail and remanded at the Male Correctional Centre in Freetown.

According to the company’s Administrative Manager, Mukesh Patel, the fourteen employees were caught red-handed along the Freetown/Masiaka highway re-bagging onions by reducing the 25 Kg bags to at least 18 Kg. Based on a tip-off, the company alerted the Police who moved swiftly and arrested the fourteen suspects including drivers.

Work at one of the company’s subsidiaries at Kissy was disrupted yesterday, following an attack on the company’s premises by some casual workers. They alleged that their colleagues were being unfairly treated by the Police.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Dennis Taylor who doubles as Local Unit Commander at Ross Road Police Station rushed to the scene with his men to put the rioters under control. The rioters were pelting stones and home-made missiles at the company’s personnel and assets.

Ten of the casual laborers who were identified as ring leaders of the riotous conduct were arrested by the Police and detained for questioning.

Investigations continue.
