By every indication, the APC party is set to stand up Dr. Samura Kamara as their Presidential candidate for the June 2023 multi-tier elections. The flurry of endorsements from the party’s big beasts shows that, Dr. Samura Kamara will be the main opposition Presidential candidate to challenge the incumbent President Brig. (Rtd) Dr. Julius Maada Bio for the top job in June this year.
The two men contested the 2018 elections for the Presidency. The then SLPP Presidential candidate, Brig. (Rtd) Julius Maada Bio twice in a row defeated the APC Presidential standard bearer, Dr. Samura Kamara. The odds against Dr. Samura Kamara are great. He lacks charisma, he is old and frail-looking and he appears to be controlled by his political mentor and Godfather, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma. Over and beyond that, Dr. Samura Kamara appears to be unpopular even in some places considered to be sympathetic to the APC party.
President Bio’s public appearances have changed of late. He now sings and dances at public gatherings organized by his party. He talks and dresses like a man who has confidence in himself.
On day one of the SLPP 13th National Delegates’ Conference held at the Freetown International Conference Centre on Wednesday, 8th February, 2023 President Bio spoke confidently of his party’s overwhelming victory in the June 2023 multi-tier elections.
Very recently, at the launch of the Biometric Identity Cards at State House, President Bio urged the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone to ensure that they do not delay the announcement of the results of the Presidential elections to be conducted on 24th June, 2023. Only a confident President running for re-election can make such a bold request.
Eleven registered political parties have all openly declared their support for the reelection of President Bio because of the good job he has done over the past four and half years. They believe that, President Bio deserves a second term in office.
Up and down this country, the electorate believe that, based on his performance in the last four and half years, President Bio deserves reelection with an overwhelming majority. No run-off!
Even his own party (the SLPP) have come out strongly to back his reelection. The party’s astute National Chairman, Dr. Prince Alex Harding said at the conference that, within four and a half years in office, the SLPP have made the impossible possible, changing despair to hope. He assured delegates at the conference that the party is firmly united behind President Bio for reelection in June 2023 without a run-off.
Over the past five years, President Bio has demonstrated strong and compassionate leadership. He has delivered on every manifesto promise he made when he contested for the Presidency in 2018.
The former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher once noted that, “Great leaders never give up”. President Bio should fight for reelection in order to be able to do more for the country.
From every indication, President Bio is set for an overwhelming reelection victory in June 2023. No run-off! Mark my word!
