The last time the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) audited Sierra Leone was in 2014 with an abysmal 18% in Air Safety. However, a draft audit report by ICAO has revealed a high score of 74% in 2023, showing significant improvement.
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) yesterday while presenting a draft report on the Safety and Security Audit of Sierra Leone’s Civil Aviation industry at the Ministry of Transport and Aviation conference hall, commended the government for the level of improvements in the sector.
Welcoming the report the Minister of Transport & Aviation, Kabineh M. Kallon commended the team for doing an excellent job that seeks to put Sierra Leone at par with other countries.
The Minister said that, when His Excellency the President Dr. Julius Maada Bio was elected in 2018, he promised to change the face of the aviation industry in terms of meeting globally accepted standards.
He commended ICAO for doing professional auditing and assured that the government will accept whatever results or findings and work on the recommendations to make the aviation industry meet global standards.
He assured that the target of the government is to have a 95% passing mark.
Presenting the draft report, the Team Lead for ICAO, Louis Opoko, said that much has been done by the Government of Sierra Leone to meet the expected standards in terms of legislation, organization, and the implementation of policies.
In his comment, the Director General of the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority, Moses Tiffa Baio said that the outcome of the report reflects the level of preparedness and commitment of the government in meeting safety regulations.
He said that even though the country has not recorded any air accidents for the past 20 years, however, they want to put in place measures to be on top of the situation within the region.
