Understanding the challenges of his people, creating timely and appropriate solutions brought him into politics and close working relationship with leaders locally and internationally. His friendship with Brigadier Julius Maada Bio goes back to when he was Chairman of the NPRC. As a youth, being instrumental in the SLPP victory brought him closer to President Kabbah. During the struggle in the early part of the late President Kabbah’s Government, the people needed livelihood opportunities towards the end of the war. He established an NGO called Advocates for Human Development Towards Self Reliance of Sierra Leone in collaboration with HDI in Phillippines. He established 100 cooperative societies, provided training and international assistance for the cooperatives, which created more admiration for his leadership across the board.
SLPP Vice President Dr Albert Joe Demby and other political heavy weights associated with the program including Ministers in this current Government who worked with the NGO. Leadership success focusing on capacity building of Sierra Leoneans attracted his constituents to support him for Parliamentary representation and he became a Parliamentarian. Whilst in Parliament he became vibrant in debating bills and motions, championing the challenges of colleague Parliamentarians, especially at a time most of the MPs not only respected but were afraid of Pa Kabbah. He succeeded in convincing the President to allocate diplomatic passports to MPs, review their salaries and benefits. His peopleโ€™s focus and being a problem solver earned him great influence and admiration across party line which made President Koroma appoint him as Minister. He served as Minister of Government from 2007 to 2015.
Resident Minister South
He consolidated regional peace, coordinated development projects including the return of Njala University, construction of the Moyamba Junction to Moyamba town township road feeder and township roads in the South, coordinated the activities of Local Councils and facilitated funding for their projects, supervised policy implementations and the activities of Traditional leaders including Paramount Chiefs. He left the Southern Region with an award from stakeholders for uniting and developing the region.
Internal Affairs Minister
He championed security sector reforms, supervised policy implementation, rebranding of the security sector, developed the integration and automation of security sector operations (Police, Immigration, Fire Force, Prisons, anti-drugs etc) and equipped the institutions with the necessary tools. (Fire engines and more fire stations, riot gears and equipment, rehabilitation of police stations, prisons and developed the Fire safety Laws, transformed the prisons to correctional centers, amended most of the obsolete laws of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, introduced the monthly one bag of rice to every police officer, established strong monitoring process for law enforcement which reduced crime significantly. Settled national and gang disputes which stopped the unlawful killing and riotous conducts of youths.
Minister Of Lands & Country Planning
As the Minister of Lands, Country Planning and the Environment, he championed the development of the National Land Policy, supervised policy implementation, developed the policy concept for biometric registration of land parcels and the cadastral system, managed land use and efficient country planning. Developed an efficient environmental policy, strengthen EPA enforcement, recovered thousands of acres of state land, thereby creating over 5000 hectares of land banks for Government.
Business Executive
He started business after his studies and enterprise his skills by establishing a construction company, through which he won infrastructure contracts and employed most of his former colleagues. It became a successful business to date most of those he made are very successful and stand with him in his bid for Presidency.
In 2015 after serving as Minister, he established a company focusing on investments and providing consultancy services to Governments and Foreign Direct Investment in Africa and beyond.
He mobilized investments, building partnerships and providing solutions for Governments in Africa on PPP and BOT bases, creating investments in infrastructure and trading activities which have led to several investments in Africa.
He is also involved in manufacturing industries creating jobs for Sierra Leoneans home and abroad, imports and export of commodities, established fashion line, garment factory, with training facilities which is currently training 100 women in Sierra Leone as Industrial tailors. His post Government leadership has demonstrated commendable skills and sustainable leadership beyond doubt, his global competiveness is earning him the necessary connections to bring opportunities to our nation.
Philanthropist
He is engaged in providing humanitarian services to religious groups, vulnerable communities and victims of disasters. One of his NGOs is facilitating allowances to thousands of Imams, building schools, paying thousands of teachers, teaching standard curriculum and Islamic studies, building mosques and supporting churches.
Pastor Yavana in Moyamba told noted that he was involved in a bad accident that almost led to amputating his legs, but for the intervention of Alhaji Musa Tarawally, his legs were saved and all bills were honored by him.
An alumnus of Saint Joseph’s Secondary School Moyamba and a UMC Church member Madan Iye said that his contributions to the catholic and UMC missions are significant.
Alhaji Musa Tarawally’s landmark investments are in most parts of the country and in several West African countries. He is considered a people’s leader with no tribal and regional sentiment and legend who continues to impact the lives of several people.
Mr Albert Senesie from USA recently observed that most Sierra Leoneans left and are still leaving Sierra Leone for greener pastures. Alhaji Musa Tarawally on the other hand spent all of his vital formative period in Sierra Leone, was able to achieve success of this magnitude with tangible investment landmarks in different countries. This is not only admirable, commendable and praiseworthy but very hopeful. It goes to show everything we need we have in front of us.
Sierra Leone not only needs Alhaji Musa Tarawally. He will be a blessing that will change the trajectory and lead the nation to prosperity.
