As part of efforts to cater for the welfare of police personnel, their dependants, and the wider community, the Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu received eight Spanish doctors of the Surgeons in Action Foundation.
The doctors from the Spain-based foundation are in Sierra Leone at the request of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) to undertake free surgical operations on 140 registered patients with the Sierra Leone Police Hospital at Kingtom.
Introducing the team, Doctor John Mumuneh Konteh who doubles as the SLP’s Medical Superintendent and Deputy Director of Medical Services said that 480 people applied to the hospital to benefit from the free surgeries.
However, only 140 patients succeeded in the initial screen to be operated by the foreign doctors who will be operating from the Kingtom Police Hospital.
Speaking on behalf of the team, Ana Mi Gdy Fdez, the team Lead said that it was a pleasure for them to come to Sierra Leone and partner with the Sierra Leone Police. She said they will also come back to Sierra Leone by the end of this year to undertake more surgeries.
Welcoming the Team, the Inspector General said he appreciated the partnership as inscribed on the doctorsโ T- Shirt โPartnership with the Police Hospital in Freetown.โ It was the third time that the team had partnered the SLP after it had received Medics from Spain to support Sierra Leone and the Police, according to Mr Sellu.
Mr Sellu called for a continuation of such efforts to provide for the welfare and medical needs of personnel, their dependants, and the wider community.
As the team left Spain for Sierra Leone at their own cost, Mr Sellu said this was a testament of the synergy between the doctors and the SLP, saying he was looking forward to more supports in diverse fields.
As per protocol and legal procedures, any health related team coming to operate in Sierra Leone must first obtain clearance from the country’s authorising body – the Medical and Dental Council. As a result, Mr Sellu informed the team that he had done the needful by obtaining the authorisation clearance which he then handed over to the Team Lead.
