The Constitutional Review Committee had recommended for the Office of the Attorney-General to be separated from that of the Minister of Justice.

In the White Paper published yesterday, the Government accepted this recommendation to separate the Office of the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice. The Attorney-General shall be the Principal Legal Adviser to the Government but not a Minister.

The Government further proposes that the age for qualification for appointment as Attorney-General be reduced from twenty years to fifteen years and be subject to Parliamentary approval. Therefore, Section 64 should be amended accordingly. That where a Minister of Justice is appointed he or she shall have a seat in the Cabinet.
