Former Finance Minister Sheku Fantamadi Bangura departed from his role with dignity following a significant cabinet reshuffle, just days after receiving accolades from President Julius Maada Bio for his exceptional management of inflation and for stabilizing the Sierra Leonean economy. In a swift administrative change, Bangura has now stepped into a crucial position as a Presidential Adviser at State House, paving the way for Karefa A. F. Kargbo as the new Minister of Finance. This transition has left the public with mixed feelings, filled with gratitude for Banguraโ€™s impactful leadership while anxiously hoping the new minister can maintain the positive trajectory.

Sheku Fantamadi Banguraโ€™s time at George Street will be remembered for its exemplary approach to macroeconomic challenges. He took charge of an economy struggling with significant global impacts and local vulnerabilities, bringing over 30 years of high-level international economic expertise to the table.

Under his guidance, inflation plummeted from an alarming 54% in 2023 to 5.8% by late 2025, a significant achievement confirmed by Statistics Sierra Leone.

His disciplined policies earned him the notable title of African Government Minister of the Year 2025, ranking him 23rd among Africaโ€™s Top 40 Finance Ministers in the African Leadership Magazine.

Just prior to the reshuffle, Bangura effectively pushed through the 2026 Supplementary Budget, anticipating Sierra Leoneโ€™s economy to reach a historic valuation of $8 billion by the end of 2026.

Days before the cabinet changes, President Bio openly praised Banguraโ€™s strict monetary policies, stable exchange rates, and improved revenue mobilization. This impressive record makes his abrupt departure from active ministerial duties particularly poignant for many in the country.

Although Bangura will remain a key figure as a Presidential Adviser, his removal from direct fiscal oversight raises significant concerns regarding continuity. The nation may face challenges such as:

– Institutional Credibility with Global Partners: Bangura had established strong trust with the World Bank, IMF, and African Development Bank. A change in leadership could lead to hesitations or delays in crucial program reviews.

– Expertise in Debt Management: Banguraโ€™s specialized knowledge in managing external debt and navigating conditional aid will be hard to replace, particularly during an ongoing cost-of-living recovery.

– Momentum on Essential Infrastructure Reforms: Before his exit, Bangura was heavily involved in addressing port crises and leading energy reforms with the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact. Any slowdown in these areas could have immediate repercussions on trade.

All eyes are on Karefa A. F. Kargbo as he steps into his new role. With a robust background in economics, accounting, and public sector management, he faces one of the toughest jobs in the country. Both the public and business sectors are brimming with a blend of anxiety and hope.

Kargbo is tasked with quickly mastering revenue mobilization and expenditure management to support President Bio’s ambitious “Big Five Game Changers” initiative.

The country is looking to the new minister to stabilize the Leone and ensure that the recent dip in inflation translates into lower prices for food and fuel in Sierra Leone.

In a final gesture of goodwill, former minister Bangura shared a farewell message, underscoring that “Sierra Leoneโ€™s economic progress must transcend individual personalities” and committed to supporting Kargbo in his endeavours.

Now, with a solid foundation laid out by Bangura, it is up to Minister Karefa Kargbo to take the reins and demonstrate that the economy can not only endure this transition but also flourish under new guidance.
