Manhunt For Makeni Generator Proteste
Makeni, August 2, 2022
Authorities have launched a nationwide manhunt for Foday Tarawalie, a prominent member of the opposition All Peopleโ€™s Congress (APC), following his escape from prison under unclear circumstances on August 1, 2022.
Tarawalie rose to national attention for his alleged role in the July 17โ€“18, 2020 protests in Makeni, triggered by the removal or transfer of an electricity generator.
The demonstrations, which turned violent in parts of the country, particularly in the Waterloo area – prompted a government investigation that identified Tarawalie as a suspected organiser.
He was arrested on June 9, 2022, along with several family members, in connection with the unrest. His detention had been ongoing until his sudden and unexplained escape.
Authorities have yet to disclose how Tarawalie managed to flee custody but have confirmed that an investigation is underway. The public is being warned that harbouring or assisting the fugitive will result in legal action.
